Most of us cringe at the thought of hitting an animal when we're driving. We still do. Driving at night here has its perils. Animals wandering out onto the roads. Unless you're in town, road lights are few and far between, and the night is BLACK: great for star but not for animals.
We were here about a month when we saw a dead horse along the mountain side of the road that takes us to town. He was a big horse, on his back and legs up. Road improvements and widening had recently begun and the construction crews were laying down and grading a thick layer of crushed rock where the dead horse lay. We were concerned...for some reason...I mean, the horse was dead.
Nothing happened. A neighbor said that the owner as soon as he learned of this mishap would "cut off" the brand so that he would not be responsible! There was no phone number to call to have some city or county agency do the carcass pickup. Over the week we saw the carcass diminishing in size, obviously being eaten by scavengers, but we never saw it happen during daytime hours. It must have happened during the dark...odd... Finally one day the carcass was gone. I assume that the road construction guys just ground what was left of the carcass into the road, or else they just pushed it off to the side in the ditch that was adjacent to the new lane they were adding to our road.
Every so often you'll see a burro or cow dead on the side of the highway that goes into Guadalajara. Sometimes you'll see the carcass of a dead dog on the road, eventually flattened into a road mat from the traffic. Life goes on...it's different here...
Oh...it's sunny and about 75 F today ;)
